I would be more worried about it attacking nylon or Delrin, which are the plastics that I think our loco gears have been made with.

And it might be a long-term effects, such as swelling leading to gear cracking.  Hard to determine without long-term lab studies.

Well, I said plastic. Delrin and nylon are plastics.

I use oils from Hobb E Lube and grease from LaBelle.
There are many less expensive options out there which are equally as good, perhaps better, than either of those.
Six of one, half dozen of the other.
