I was very interested in these. Thanks to Bryan for trying to make these happen - too bad they didn't pan out.

I did pick up one of the Athearn versions (not nearly as nice as the ESMC versions) in SOUTHERN, but they cancelled the entire run with N&W (so I guess nobody actually wants these )

Yeah, the anti-vandal panels we had designed for the Athearn cars were much better than what they created.  Ours would have been stainless steel, so the bare metal would have been superior to anything painted.

Still hoping to get the Portec enclosed bi-level racks out someday.  3D-printing has brought them closer to reality and eliminated many of the previous obstacles.  The cost of a bending fixture for the body wrapper and the juxtaposition of the fixture or contracting the wrappers to be pre-folded, are still the biggest sticking points.  For what it's worth, MTL will be 4C printing the etched-nickel silver body wrappers should the kits ever make it into production.  They printed samples of the GTW blue car shortly after they acquired the 4C technology and they look spectacular, and that was back when they were still learning the process.  Also had some contractors in the Kingdom print the GTW and ROCK artwork.  It looked acceptable but it did not adhere fully to the nickle silver.

I was wondering if the Portec racks were still moving forward, esp with all the negative news about NSK recently

NSK is not the obstacle. The obstacle is the bending of the etched wrapper without the cost being astronomical.

Are you looking for tooling or a contractor to do it? I would think it wouldn't be too difficult to design a 3d printed buck to form the wrapper against.

I still haven't been able to find a EL car, the last one I was bidding on was damaged by the previous owner and still sold for 3 figures.

One of these days I'll track one down.

If it’s any consolation, the car was not short-run.  I see them turn up online every now and then.

finding a contractor isn’t the problem. Cost is the problem.

Ron over at Des Plaines Hobbies used to form the O Scale etched passenger car bodies in the back room.  It was a similar, roof and sides single etching, using a buck on a hydraulic press.

A hand press in N scale should be enough.  I started down that road with Z scale etched Superliners... but AZL did them in plastic saving me time and money!

Anyway, thanks for sharing the list and the what-could-of-beens.  All these suggestions are a lot of Bryan handwork... and I know that's not appealing.

I have the EL car and, though I've yet to add the paneling, the car will be excellent judging from the pics of the finished car. Too bad this series never got off the ground, I'd have been a regular customer, several in multiples.
