I know I need 14mm long glass switches, but gert bewildered looking on Google for them. Anybody have a source for these things? the boards and LEDs are fine, the switches got broken.

Both DigiKey and Mouser carry equivalents.  I don't know the part numbers, but I know they have them.

Are those latching reeds, or is there a small magnet placed next to them (to make a standard reed switch into a latching one)?

You use a magnet to activate them to turn the car lights on or off. No magnet mounted near them.

When turning these on or off with the magnet wand, they seem to be polarity agnostic, leading me to believe the latching is done through the circuitry and not the switch. I've bought and used some true latching reed switches to brew my own "easy peasy" lights and the wand definitely requires a different orientation for on vs off.

Yes, sounds like a standard reed switch causing the electronic circuit to toggle on and off.

Digikey shows 8 different ones available and in stock.  Click on this link for search results.

I've replaced one or two of those over the years.  They aren't latching, and they don't have to be "14mm".  As long as they fit in the recess on the board and the leads reach the pads, they will work.  I measure a 14mm body, like you did, but a 16mm body would fit, and the solder pads are 20mm apart.
Be quick when you replace these.  Too much heat will ruin them.  You want to really get in and out in an instant with the iron.
Jameco is a great place to get things like this.  In fact, they have them right now for about a buck a piece.
