The MP36 decoder should work DN163K4B, it has dual led on the front.
I do know they work on the ALC-42 since iI got one by accident.

These shells on the SC-44 and ALC-42 are not that easy to take off but I managed. I'll admit I'm a novice and I was being extra careful.
They do indeed appear to be the exact same 17736 chassis but the inside of the shells differ quite a bit.
The SC-44 has the upper and lower LEDs on the front of the stock light board. So the DN163K4B could be a contender as sundowner mentioned.
The ALC-42 came stock with the additional light decoder for the engine compartment. No such luck on the SC-44. But that was advertised as needing the light decoder added.
I'm probably going to wait a bit and see if Digitrax updates their site based on their response to my inquiry.

I also wish they had separate cars.  And the full set doesn’t need two superliners.  A regular consist is 6 cars not 7. But beggars can’t be choosers and happy to have them finally be released by someone!

It looks like the 1 loco 7 car set gives you options to use either the surfliner painted superliner or the regular superliner. Seeing as the 6 car consist is seen with both.

I don't believe any of the plug-n-play decoders have built-in engine compartment LED.  For DC operation Kato recommends adding one of the passenger car illumination LED boards to the back of the chassis. There is a depression in  the chassis for housing that board (behind the gray plastic piece marked 17736).   The engine compartment "light pipe" has to be illuminated from behind. The decoder board does not reach there. For DCC operation I made my own LED board (similar in size the the Kato light board) and hardwired it to the decoder.

I miss spoke when I said decoder for the engine compartment light. Sorry. I meant the 11-211 interior lighting kit.
