Conversion list

After going out of my way getting the wrong GP-38 units for the Milw, I thought to ask is there some sort of conversion list showing what models are needed to build specific units for Milw or your particular line?

A chart over the decades of what the base model needs to be, add certain parts and boom, done.

Strangely enough the early lifelike GP-38 does appear to be the right one with 'chicken wire', but I'm not very knowledgeable.
I wonder if the proto ones could be modded with brass etches, as they are now surplus.

Have you seen these resources?
A lot of work, but very helpful over time.

That's really good, thank you.

It seems that some GP38-2 did have the blister fan part in the middle ( I don't know the correct term) and some did not.  A lot more to chose from than expected.
There are two dcc listed Atlas GM&O GP38 I could make an offer on if they are suitable doners.

That center blister fan is the dynamic brake cooling fan. Not all RRs ordered their locos with dynamic brakes, and then with those, depending on the model, some railroads ordered theirs with extended range dynamics

And on the RR Picture Archives, up in the top right you can click on an organize button.

This is probably more helpful to you.  By model.

That way you can look at all GP38s.

Now, by the way..... you mentioned in your posts.... both
GP38
and GP38-2

They are not the same locos... though they are very similar.  Many people care.... many don't.    This board probably has more that care.... but not all.    The overall look of both is very similar.

Is there one or the other that you are specifically looking for?
What exactly are you hoping to model?

From the RR Picture archive link above.... it looks like Milwaukee Road did not own any GP38s.   Just DASH 2 versions.

Are they right to work with?

350-355 did not have dynamic brakes
356-364 had dynamic brakes

MILW did not own any GP38's, so those GM&O GP38's aren't going to be useful (except for the extent that you can reuse the GP38 chassis with a new GP38-2 shell since MILW used Blomberg B trucks on both orders)

Re: shells, I recall Atlas makes 7 variants (notwithstanding the former LL/Walthers Phase II GP38-2)

Phase Ia w/o dynamic brakes
Phase Ia with dynamic brakes
Phase Ia with extended range dynamic brakes
Phase Ib w/o dynamic brakes (e.g. MILW 350-355)
Phase Ib with dynamic brakes (e.g. MILW 356-365)
Phase Ib with extended range dynamic brakes
Phase Ib with high short hood, extended range dynamic brakes, and paper air filter

If you find a complete GP38-2 that has Blomberg M trucks vs just a shell to put on a GP38 (or GP40) chassis, you can swap truck sideframes with Blomberg B

That was my mistake thinking they were the same, I assumed so.  That's the trouble with assuming, it's not always right  :)
I confused myself with this one.
I have two LL/Walthers GP38-2, one with dynamic and one without, family lines and Santa Fe and one early LL GP38 Family Lines.
I might still have to look for one more online to match.
I went with the LL/Walthers, as they are supposed to run really well.

As for what units to model, is not to critical right now, but I would like to get them right enough as a pair.

Looking at Fallen flags, I did spot some GP38 that appeared to not be -2 suffixed.

https://www.rr-fallenflags.org/milw/milw0355jfa.jpg
Or is it my error?

I don't see many Atlas GP38-2 around to work with or get the shells from.
