Kato Ballast

I used Kato track and ballast on my previous layout in Mechanicsburg. Alot of it was the double-track with concrete ties, which I painted.

In the not-so-great photo below, there is a short section of the double-track adjacent to the RS-2, but the sections leading into it and out of it are single-track pieces with Kato ballast in between.

I may still have some of it. If I can find it, I'd be glad to send you a sample for comparison.

Looking back at the SE ballast... The light gray does look like a better match, but PRR ballast tended to darken pretty quick, and I intend to weather the center of the track along those lines. Maybe I should go with the blend instead.

The (yes, somewhat translucent) light gray plastic used for Unitrak contains little pieces of little black and white specks mixed into  it. Their ballast probably has some of those white and black specks mixed into it to better blend with the molded ballast.

Exactly. And it looks like ballast with white and black specks mixed in.
