Chain Link Fencing

The gold medal stuff looks great in person, but in photos, it's just too chonky.  Looks more like lattice under a porch than chain link.
But you can't beat the barbed wire detail at the top.

The way I see it, the problem with anything that's actually "to scale" is that it's not even going to be identifiable as chain link fencing. That's why I prefer GMM and its chonkiness.

Have to  say Lee's bridal veil fabric is the closest to scale chain link. I use that stuff wherever I need a screen mesh, like over a large exhaust opening on a building. Anti-theft screens over factory windows. I used it for the side screening on my late-version DL109 model. It's not exactly scale, but you get the mesh-like look w/o looking like a piece of painted fabric.

There are various screens of woven metal for use in commercial equipment (sorting seives, for one), but I don't know where to get it. You  get some almost scale chain-link there, and being metal holds its shape, takes paint w/o clogging the mesh, and is easily bendable.

I bought some fenching a few years ago from England. I haven't used it yet and put it away. I'll digit out and let you knw who I got it from. Realistic looking stuff though.

One thing is that sooner or later you're going to snag it or whack it.   I did the fabric and screen mesh attempts both on prior layouts, and in all cases, they looked great right up until they got snagged while track cleaning, rerailing a car, or doing other scenery improvements.

So I went to the GMM stuff (which has a drilling template) and just leave them in loose in the holes.   If I do snag them, they release, I can straighten everything back out and reinsert.   Or replace it if I've really messed up.   Same thing applies to the GMM barbed wire fence, I have a lot of that along the ROW and it's chunky in photos but it's nice to have a 'standard' part that's replaceable when it gets damaged.

Goes back to one of the basic problems with N scale, am I building a perfect photo diorama or an operating layout that involves humans?   Sometimes they just don't get along at all.

That's why I am waiting to see traincat2's stuff at market so I can decide where to go. You make good points, I have seen many mangled fences on layouts that operate. So your advice is well taken. In my case the fencing will not be in an area that gets much engagment so hoping for the best there.
