IMO, there is no need  to remove the analog operating mode. It is a very handy feature (for operating on foreign layout or even more so for quick pass/fail decoder testing - I use 9V battery).  Why remove it when it can be easily disabled by . . . changing a setting in . . . CV29.  As simple as that.

I'm also glad that (for the earlier mentioned testing reasons) it is enabled by default.   Think about it - removing useful functionality is never good.

I don't remember ever taking a DCC locomotive to run on a DC layout ..  software is deprecated all the time .. its like hanging on to the old IBM-DOS disk because someday you might want to play an old Avalon D-Day game  :?

I'll give you the decoder test option .. its nice - but I prefer to drop the loco on the programming track and build current file in JMRI

There are members here who run DCC (and sound) equipped locos on DC.  Just because you don't do it, doesn't mean that others don't.  And as mentioned, that feature is easily disable, so it shouldn't cause you any pain.

If you are buying a used DCC loco at a train show, a 9V battery in your pocket comes in really handy.  DC test (again using a 9V battery) is also very handy quick-n-dirty initial test of a misbehaving DCC loco.  I have mentioned that 9V battery test here more than once usually I get a "thank you for the idea".
