The Plano parts are similar to the GMM parts and would not work for the MTL car.

Would there be demand for an etched kit that fits some older tank cars with large domes?

That depends on the dimensions of the tank car model that they are designed for...

Given the railings around the dome would increase the overall height of the car, it follows that the diameter of tank has to be small enough to not make the end result a freak show.

Kato's chemical tank appears to be too long to use right out of the box, but the diameter of the tank and the dome might be a good match after shortening the length of the car and "Americanizing" a model that is otherwise based on a JNR prototype

Back in the early 80s, I saw a tank car in Pasco yard that looked very much like the Kato car, right down to the angled platform railings.  Replacing the end railings with a more American style next to the tank end does wonders for these cars.  One can either install an American-style vertical shaft brakewheel, or mount a power brakewheel on the end of the tank.
