Big Boy traction tires

Need some help finding some traction tires for my Athearn Big Boys and Challenger.

Have you corresponded with Athearn? They know this is a problem, that all it takes is one or two good pushes resolving a stall and the tires are ruined*. It was several years ago, but I asked them about replacements and they sent a handful in a #10 envelope.

* - Which is why you should never, ever run these models on a club or other group-operation setting. Somebody on the other side of the layout "does you a favor" by pushing your loco along to get past a stall, not understanding that they just turned it into a workbench queen. Of which I have three.  :x

Didn't the loco come with extra spare tires in a little baggies in the box?  If not, then I also recommend contacting Athearn.  Their customer service people do respond to emails.

If that fails, then a 3rd party vendor (like Chinapig mentioned) can be used.


Mike:  In my experience Bog Boy is not that prone to thrown tires due to it being pushed.  Kato 4-8-4 locos are much more delicate and can be easily messed up by being pushed along the track.  Either way, when I run my trains on NTRAK layouts I usually follow them around the layout.  Wireless throttles make this easy.

I just bought TT’s from them and it was quick and painless, BUT they are listed by diameter and width. This means you MUST measure the driver groove bottom diameter and groove width. There are also various tire material thicknesses, so you need to choose one that when installed is slightly larger than the old of a non TT driver.

Shipping was very fast, like thee days regular mail.

I was very pleased.
