SPERRY RAIL SERVICE

Building a Sperry Rail Service (SRS) Testing Unit. Using a TOMIX 40 Diesel Rail Car shell (double cab car, but was unpowered), and KATO RDC4 powered under carriage. SRS decals from Circus City, and Walthers. Minor filing at ends of shell to accept KATO frame. Will DCC with DN 143K2 Decoder. Painted frame and trucks flat black. Body shell painted with RUST-OLEUM rattle cans (shell Tuscan Sun Yellow and roof Aluminum). Will paint out some side windows. Roof appliances from parts box. Not exact, but SRS uses a variety of units, so close. Simple project, and at home on every layout.

Awesome! I always enjoy it when people can combine relatively easy parts together to make a model.

Terrific , I love it too . The RDC has a nice smooth quiet drive . Any plans on if or how to reduce the speed range of the OEM RDC drive other than DCC ?

We had one of these in town and I honestly thought I was following a caboose down the road until I pulled alongside it.

I always loved the Brill rebuilds but time moves on.

Nice job on the conversion and the RDC chassis is probably significantly better than the stock Tomix.

How close would the RDC4 chassis be in terms of wheelbase for a Brill rebuild?  I would like to do one at some point, maybe cutting up a Bachmann doodlebug shell to get the body.

Inside body width .66
Inside length 5.26 +/-
Truck centers 4.18 +/-

I THINK the Kato RDC chassis width will be wider . I have to find mine to check , thought I had them in the den .
