Temporary freight car destinations

Since I’ve got more railcars than I can have on the layout at any one time, I’ve been looking at ways to realistically justify rotating certain types on (and off) every so often. I have been saving photos of temporary “industries” like road construction (tank cars for road tar, hoppers with gravel) and such things and have a team track behind a depot I can use. I am going to build a few small pieces of unloading equipment to match the cars I want to operate. Nothing new or ground breaking, but I thought I would share some interesting photos I have come across (I’m stuck in the 1950s or so).

Here’s my location with a load of poles for the local utility company

Though not a temporary situation, I thought this one was interesting in that the unloading pipe for the tank car is on the siding with the elevator and the fuel company and storage tanks are on the other side of the main track (and another track). Might be a good way to incorporate a tank car destination on a elevator track.

I also like this one and think it would make a interesting little temporary scene

I wouldn’t mind seeing other examples if anyone has some

That is *SO* neat!  It would be great to have this one in N scale (3D printed scissors or scratchbuilt from styrene and brass).

When I saw this photo, first thing that came to my mind was "a grandfather of the catering truck for the airlines".

A storage track......I live in a town with a very short line, it connects to the CSX main, runs about 12 miles to my town. It’s few shippers are a few miles up the line. The track dead-ends near the village. When economy is slow....like now and the foreseeable future, this dead end is used to store cars for other roads/private cars. I’m sure they’re paid a few bucks per day per car. Right now there’s a cut of about 15 covered hoppers sitting there.

Oh man, Tom, those are some great pictures.  All kinds of good details in them.  That ice truck is awesome, as others have said.  And I like seeing the oil unloading being done with just a pump setup and going right into a truck.  Not complex to model.
