I hadn't thought of bicycles and lawnmowers, but those are both good sources, and shops for one or the other are almost everywhere.

Then there is always the sheathed cable used in RC model airplanes. Much easier to work with than automotive or bicycle cables.

One part of me would want to build like a 1/5 scale replica of a real handbrake on the front of the layout, which begs the question of if I would want a vertical or horizontal wheel, and whether or not I would want it to have a mechanical advantage built in to it too.

Then the other half of me remembers that I deal with both of those in 1/1 and the solution that Peteski’s friend came up with becomes a whole lot nicer.
