Always interesting to see what our Z scale friends are able to accomplish and to discover new things about Germany, so thanks for the international edition.  I can't imagine a trade show here in the states with 53,000 people attending!  Seeing the Henrichenburg boat lift model is an "aha experience" for me.

I found the article on containers very informative.  I don't remember seeing these when I was a little kid in Germany ..

True, but they work well, and are no less prototypical than MTs, on European models.  A smaller version would work fine, on layouts with large-radius curves, but many European modelers need the sharp curves, due to lack of space.

That was the reason why I'd consider MT's if I were to start model European Z- it's not more prototypically incorrect than the fishhooks. Naturally MT's would be more expensive to outfit per car for something that would still be wrong.

I've seen pictures of a few European N scale meter-gauge models, and most of them use MT couplers.  Most of the prototypes use some type of centered coupler, either a center buffer with screw-link couplers on either side, or one of the "transit-style" automatic couplers, so a MT doesn't look out of place.

Somewhat off-topic, but the Marklin coupler is basically tfe same idea as the Miller passenger car coupler from the 1800s.

The Miller was longer and narrower, but the working principle is the same, and it was, apparently, fairly successful.
