What is this on the UP 4014

I have not seen a gizmo such as this before. Is it to adjust valves in the steam chest, or is it a governor, or is it powering a master lubricator?

I did not take this picture but rather it is a screen shot from the most excellent 4014 video that I have seen. Check it out!

It's an automatic oiler.

Looks like the Big Boy ran over a bicycle, and some of its parts got stuck in the loco's running gear.

Backup propulsion system. In the event of a boiler firing failure, pedals pop up from the floor of the cab, and all the joyriders, wannabes and other hangers-on who wheedled their way into the cab are told to start pumping.

What is with the radiator like panels on the sides of the front porch.


And notice the bicycle chain is not on this model.. There must modifications  durring service.. or locomotive variations?

And apparently 4019 had smoke lifters at one point?.. never knew that.

Could be the early ones didn't originally have automatic oilers or had a different way to drive them. Also, I have noticed not all of them had the cooling tubes up front. In fact, 4014 doesn't currently have them and I thought, at first, maybe they didn't put them back on. However, they aren't there in vintage photos of 4014, either.

Even the models were modeled with or without the cooling tubes on the pilot.

drives the flux capacitor. You see , we ended up back in 1955 when these brutes were still running. This never happened in 2019.   Oh i crack me up...

They show it connected to the eccentric link with a lever rod. They must have moved it up and back so now requires a chain to drive it.

The chain sprocket is right on the eccentric link with a chain that runs up to another sprocket on the lubricator.

The chain doesn't spin continuously. Every time the eccentric moves back and forth the chain moves back and forth to spin the lubricator. This happens pretty slowly compared to how fast the loco is moving.

Interesting that the rear engine does not use the same design for its lubricator.

Looks like the rear is in the stock location. Dunno why they moved it.
