N scale equivalent of this box car?

I was wondering if any experts here could identify the closest match to this boxcar in N scale. I'd like to do a custom paint project but I'm having a hard time identifying a box car that would be a good place to start. The real one is built by PS and has 100 ton trucks.

Looks like a 50' PS1 to me. Athearn's your best bet, but you'll have to alter the door to get a match.

How wide is the door opening? The door off the Atlas Nsc boxcar might work... Or a esm x58...

Dont know the exact type of boxcar but Roundhouse made a kit for an identical one in the black scheme.




Obviously a bit light on the details.

164043 is Pullman Standard, built 1967 with a 10’-0” door.

That black Roundhouse car is supposed to be an ex-Norfolk Western RBL insulated box to which the C&NW added the letter “C”. In reality, the C was slightly “squished;” Roundhouse made it a bit too uniform. I think it’s on their mystery “high cube” car too, instead of an RBL.

Thanks so much guys. Looks like Athearn's "Hi Cube" Boxcar is the place to start. I have a couple already and one is supposed to have 100 ton trucks and 36" wheels so this all makes sense.

Except it has the wrong ends, roof and basically everything for the car in your photo...

Like @sirenwerks suggested I would start with a Athearn Ps1 and replace the door. Not perfect but definitely closer then the ex MDC made up hicube...

After taking a closer look at those Athearn models I see exactly what you're saying. The Athearn PS1 would be a better start without the roofwalks. The MDC car looks completely different.

What type of door is on the real boxcar?

It looks very much like the one on the ESM X58.

It’s a PS-1 with Youngstown Camel plug doors. The doors aren’t available in N unfortunately. I’ve been fabricating one but it’s been lower on the priority list. You need an Athearn plug door model which would require the doors to be cut out and scratchbuilt doors added. I designed new 3D doors for mine. I can make the Shapeways part available for public sale if you choose to travel that route.

The brass roofwalk is easy to remove, but you would have to file and sand off the molded in ladders and B-end hardware to install lowered brake appliances.

Isn't the Micro-Trains 'Standard' 50ft boxcar a PS-1?   And they make a version without roofwalks and short ladders on two corners.  You'd still need to change out the door, and some ladder and stirrup details, to get an exact match.

The plug door is too narrow and the body dimensions and ride height of the Athearn model are more accurate.

I saw that Micro-Trains does make a 50' PS-1 without roofwalk, and lowered ladders, etc. It has the wrong kind of door. It's body style 180 and it looks like they only introduced it a couple of years ago. If I could get a 10' Plug Door replacement, that might be the easiest path, assuming that this newer MT release has the correct dimensions and ride height.
