I have seen those trash flats discounted heavily at a few LHS.  Perhaps a lesson in product selection. Yes, a never done before prototype, but inherently disgusting to model...…..How many modelers are going to model a landfill or maybe even recycling center that would use these?  Doesn't fit the switchers mold of industry (although someone could manufacture a landfill scene, not much different than various junkyard scenes) to drape over a big plaster mountain or ridge......

Several scratch and sniff trains of garbage run through Fredericksburg, VA every day on the old RF&P CSX mainline from DC to Richmond. Virginia imports a lot of garbage from NJ and NYC evidently. A train with these cars could be a run through. No need to model the destination, or the origin point either.

Garbage flats are used to carry (low) radioactive contaminated mine tailings in Utah. I see them all the time

How do people that model those trash trains get them to smell like the prototype?

Now that’s an idea for the dcc decoder makers.  Dcc, sound and smell.

MK:  Smell for a stock car is easy.  Get a piece of cow or sheep manure, and you're in business.  I've never had anything to do with sheep, but fresh dried "cow pies" actually have very little odor, and what there is smells more like decomposing grass clippings than "solid waste". 

We hauled many pickup loads of them from a feedlot to a couple acres of Pasco sand back in the early 70s.  It was dry, from backing in the sun, and the liquid draining into the sand underneath; well powdered from the cows walking on it; and smelled more like dirt than anything.  We drove right into the pens, with the cows, and shoveled the bed full.  Had a terrible time keeping it from blowing out on the drive back!

Still, anyone considered backdating use to the 'van' trailer days? I don't know how good these are for it, but 85' flats were used (created?) by some railroads before true commercial 90' flats capable of carrying two 45' trailers/ containers became common.
I don't model much TOFC but know the Rio Grande carried a few interim cars with solid side sills and the like for some time.
