Sandro,
There were two versions of this model. I'm not certain if the motor changed.
You can tell your version by the worm.
http://www.spookshow.net/loco/omishay.html
version 1: Worm protruded down through the floor of the cab and into the middle of the rear cab truck. It interfaces a gear on one of those axles on the truck.
version 2: Worm is hidden in the 3 cylinders on the side. It interfaces with the driveshaft.
Sounds like you might have the first version since I know the second versions had a coreless Faulhaber motor.
Think you could pull the shell and take some measurements of the motor?

got 3 shays of the 2nd version. motor dimensions are 10mm diameter, 15mm length. and it has a "sagami dc motor" sticker on it.

Given that size, my first choice would be a Mashima 1015 (10mm diam x 15mm long). It has the same 1.5mm shaft as the old Sagamis. You may have to cut the shaft to make it match up. The mashima are not round. They are rectangular. The 10mm is the "larger" dimension of the body, so fitting should be no problem.
Any photos of how it's mounted in there? I'd want to see that to see how hard it would be to retrofit the motor.

I'm going by memory..... but IIRC
The mounts are shaped like a mantle clock.
https://www.clockway.com/idmark.php?w=900&h=1600&hk=4KlkoRL44&i=mm5/graphics/00000001/CHM-630161-L1.jpg
The top round part goes up over the motor bearing.
Two screws on the bottom go the the frame.
I'm sure Sandro will have a better description if my memory is faulty.

Looking at that photo on Spookshow's page, if your motor is mounted like that, you should be able to make a
Mashima 1015 fit in there. The joint from the motor to the work is via a rubber tube, so there should be no problem making that work.
