Santa Monica, February 22, 1953

February 22, 1953 was the only time that the Pacific Electric ran a PCC on the Santa Monica Airline. Fortunately for the Pacific Electric fan, there are at least two pictures of this, one at the West Hollywood  freight station and one at the Santa Monica freight station.

Back in the late 1980’s, Bachmann made a PCC car and decorated it for the Pacific Electric. Unfortunately for the PE modeler, it is a single end car, and has the quality of 1980’s Bachmann. I still have a pair  of these, and the shells still fit on a new, updated chassis. Tonight I decided to duplicate this historical event. I moved around the buildings.

Love it when someone builds a model that can pass for the real location (not so much the Bachmann car as the buildings)

Thanks guys, I will not be modeling this scene to completion. I realized that there are very few images of this area online, and I have not found a track plan other than the route. Most of the traffic on the Santa Monica Airline was freight. I have decided to freelance a branch called Playa Desnuda. It will be based on the Airline and El Segundo. This is the west half of my layout. The bare east half will have a large oil depot and a strip of merchants. This is how it will be permanently laid out, just more scenery and telephone poles...
