Another possible solution would be fishing line.  It comes in many different diameters, is very cheap, flexible, and almost unbreakable.

Where I work we even use it for welding paper oil/fuel filter elements together.  Put a piece between the ends of the filter paper, and vibrate it in an ultrasonic welder to melt the line.
