Hopewell, Va

Interesting little, OK maybe not so little, industrial area in the town of Hopewell Virginia. Found this gem Google Earth surfing. I keep going back to it looking thinking man that would make a neat little industrial layout. Given then I keep going back to it and looking at it more than places that are supposed to be on my Idaho Belt layout downstairs I'm wondering if I'm not being bitten by the small layout bug, but I haven't figured out how to fit this on a hollow-core door.

Looks like really 1 major industry, chemical company,  and a power plant. There may be another chemical company there. From AdvanSix's website:

Quote
The AdvanSix Hopewell facility is one of the world’s largest single-site producers of caprolactam, the primary feedstock in the production of nylon polymer used in carpet fibers, plastics and films. It also produces a wide range of chemical intermediates, including Nadone® cyclohexanone, Naxol® cyclohexanol, sulfuric acid, specialty oximes, ammonia and carbon dioxide. The site is also a global leader in the development and production of ammonium sulfate fertilizers, which it sells under the Sulf-N®brand for both crop and turf applications.

Looks like they had a lot tank cars and some chemical hoppers. Not sure, but you could put the plant in the center of a door with tracks going in and out or around and maybe use a second in an L-shape for the adjoining yard,

There's a paper mill, a former rayon plant, and ethanol plant, LPG dealer, oil Depot which is just off screen in the upper right, an old Hercules chemical plant, and another former chemical plant in there. There is also some type of coal fired power plant and there's a spare that goes to the local Water Treatment Plant which is off screen. The tracks along industrial Street actually make a complete loop around part of the chemical area.

I haven't been able to tell if it's CSX, Norfolk Southern or both that switch industries.  More research being done and perhaps a day trip because Hopewell's only about an hour from me.

That looks like it's served by two railroads (NS and CSX?), like NS is coming in from the southwest and CSX from the west, and they cross each other at bottom left.

One of those chemical plants caused some serious water pollution back in the 70's...probably the one that's shut down.

 :?
   Cris,
    whats an Alco S-12 ?
Alco never built any 1200 HP switchers.
but some EMD 567s have found their way into
a number of Alco S-2/4s over the years.
there may still be a Fish Advisory for Blue and
Channel Catfish from the James River.just don't eat
too much during a month or so.
should also be a Honeywell plant in that area, and a
   Dupont Kevlar plant in Chesterfield.
also the worlds largest condum plant is in the area.
don't think they ship by rail.

Kepone is some nasty chit. I eat nothing from the James. The DuPont plant is pretty visible from I95. Impressive. ". Honeywell left a few years ago I think.

OK, what is CN 8245?  An Alco-repowered Baldwin, or an Alco/MLW model unique to Canada?

1000hp MLW built units for CN... Powered by a turbocharged 6 cyl 539 engine 11 units were built in 1958.

http://yardlimit.railfan.net/mlw/s12/index.html

CP had a normally aspirated 660hp version designated S11.

There was also a 251c powered version designated S13 (CN) or RS23 (CP) main spotting difference being the trucks.

 ;)
all those odd ball MLW switchers were 1000 HP,either 539 or 251 powered.
the RS-23 had a 244 from the FPA/B-2s that were repowered with 251 blocks,
and were the Proto/Test units for the FPA/B-4s.they were 1400HP.
none were built by Alco in the USA.
so that Baldwin S-12 is running today ?
    interesting.
