Now what? Now recurring "only secure content displayed"
« on: April 09, 2017, 03:46:08 AM »
Those goddam Russians can't even leave our RR websites alone ... the "insecure certificate" messages have gone away but now every time I change to another page on TRW I get that message listed in the subject. I mean, every single page. I hit the buttons and usually you only get that msg once when you first enter a site. Those goddam Russians ...

I don't want anyone to think this is a hack attempt, so I'll explain.  These types of messages are displayed because the pages and text content are delivered via SSL protocol, but the images (since they are linked here) are not.

Keep your alternative facts straight.  :D

Good to get an explanation.

As the world converts to HTTPS, we'll be seeing this...  I just converted my web site www.elmassian.com to HTTPS, and there are some pages that have external links that are not secure, so the little green padlock sometimes gets the yellow exclamation (using FireFox)....

I suspect this will take a year or so to settle down, forums seem to move pretty slowly.

Ok, truth time.

I work with SSL's on servers more than anyone else here.

An SSL can only guarantee the content from the site that it protects. It is still possible to see the "error" that not all content is secure on a site that has links from other secure sites. The railwire SSL does not guarantee the validity of my SSL on http://sopacincg.com even though it is valid until 2019.

Isn't that what Tom said?

Your explanation is a bit more complete, i.e. ANY link that is not HTTPS can/will flag as a page insecure in a browser.

Not sure there needs to be an implication that the term "truth time" is needed  :D

not quite. Even secure data from a different site can display here with an unsecure "error"

I'm sure your harsh language toward "Russians" is meant to be cute and in keeping with the times, however it is possible that some members may be of some Russian ancestry.
Not me, but perhaps there are.
What I am confident of though is that there are probably people that don't appreciate the language you use to describe them.
Some, perhaps just returning home from Church.

I think Al was being sarcastic again without using emoticons to convince us that it was honest "sarcasm".  :|

OK, so this little warning box is going to keep popping up on TRW until I ...get a brand-new superpower computer,  or upgrade to Windows ZOW, or change my internet provider, or what? It's just an annoyance I just keep clicking it out each time. But if this is to do with some new wave sweeping all websites on the internet, I'm afraid every page I bring up anywhere on any site will have the box appear.
This ISN'T sarcasm. I really don't understand why whenever something changes on the internet, they don't make it compatible with what was there before.

It's probably IE.  Just need to change the security settings to allow mixed content.

John, can you amplify on this?

My understanding that if a reference on the page uses an HTTPS url AND that the certificate referenced is properly traceable, that you will not get an "unsecure" error.

This is what I was saying, albeit in greater detail and more unambiguously.

I'd really like to learn the "rules" for this message, which I only seem to get on IE.

Greg
