I would say that Bob has come very close to the goal.  I think a crop to get a little closer (and to get rid of the out of focus foreground) and it'll match the UP calendar photo nicely. Perspective lines are close.

But if he took that shot over using even wider angle lens and closer to the loco (if possible), to exaggerate the perspective some more, then he would have even closer match.  His original photo is pretty darn good already - however with his quest for perfection I'll be anxiously awaiting for what he comes up with.

However, you're way off on your figures as far as degree of capture is concerned.  When I read this, I thought "There's no way this photo is more than 90 degrees...", so, not being able to quickly find the actual degree of capture the Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 zoom has at 11mm, I took a couple of 4' long dowels into the train room and duplicated the camera location and what the photo had captured, then took my old Pickett adjustable triangle, and measured the angle of the two dowels. Best I can determine, the angle of capture is 84 degrees, which I would not consider to be a "panorama". 

Oops.  My bad.     I incorrectly interpreted a Wikipedia article about "angle of view" along with a couple of charts that give angle of view versus lens focal length. (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angle_of_view).  Should have known better.

This was a good article but in my eyes it still doesn't cover one important (to me) fact: It only seems to analyze a single eye's field of vision where most humans have a pair of eyes.  Try to look at some scene in front of you and then cover one of your eyes. You will see part of the scene disappear.  While some of the missing image is part of the peripheral vision, part of it is not.

To me even what is considered peripheral vision still plays important role in the overall picture of things.   My guess is that the human's angle of vision (both eyes) is greater than what the article states.

Here's an image I took of a shay on my now dismantled Lost Creek On30 RR.
I used my old EOS 400D and its standard 17-80 lens at the time and used Helican focus to stack the images.
No special lighting just the old fluros that were over the layout.
