I have a lettering diagram that corroborates what Mike said at least about the start date. 11-11-49 "Serves All The West" was changed to "Be Specific Ship Union Pacific".

When did they switch from the small Union Pacific to the larger block version? was that 1949 aswell?

there are also several variations on that scheme,as time went
by the lettering got larger.
