Good info Ryan - thanks!
Now that we know the terminology the next question is whether 220 MPH is its operational speed or maximum speed.  But then again, since the actual speed through the NE corridor will be more likely much lower than the lower of the lowest speed, does it really matter how fast the train can go?

Its operational speed will be 160mph based of the top speed on the improved section of the NEC.

Do you also happen to know in what percentage of the route from DC to Boston will this speed be achieved?

As far as I know it will be 20 to 30 miles in New Jersey, the top speed of the New York to Boston section will remain at 150MPH (for about 30 miles) pending a change in FRA regulations (they've been doing tests at 160-165mph).

As far as precentage at top speed, less then 10%? Average speed for Acela is about 84mph. Not counting station delays.

Thanks Ryan.  That's exactly what I was interested in.

No worries, it will be exciting to see what the future holds...
I know Biden was a big proponent of high speed rail and had plans for upgrading the infrastructure on the NEC to 200+ mph. ...but with the nature of your political system plans change every 4-8 years...

I wonder if they have addressed any of the tilting problems that the Acela reportedly had, which might allow slightly faster speeds.

I vaguely remembered that the original Acela trains were inadvertently made a little too wide to go "full tilt" (sorry, couldn't resist).   Here's an old NY times article that says 4" too wide  (and lots general negativity: http://www.nytimes.com/2005/04/24/us/acela-built-to-be-rails-savior-bedevils-amtrak-at-every-turn.html?_r=0 )

I think that automobiles are rated a bit differently than trains. I suspect that trains are designed to run at their rated speeds for extended period of time.

Exactly. Additionally, any high speed train gets maintained nightly, and overhauled frequently, so it'd be expected that running full out daily would be possible and practical.

I imagine the new trainset will be able to run faster through curves than the existing Acela because of the increased tilt. It will also weigh considerably less which will help with acceleration/deceleration so they can run at top speed for longer periods. All this is possible because the FRA is finally changing their position on required minimum weight on passenger trains to be more in line with other countries.

Amtrak will be operating this, right????
