What were the CV cars used for? Just locomotive coal or online customers as well?

I would expect most would be for on line customers. The fleet remained largely intact years after CV retired their steam fleet.

Open top cars on Canadian National and their subsidiaries were painted black until they switched to brown in 1948. Given the lettering style on this CV run, black is appropriate.

Just to add a little here.
The CV along with the CN switched over from black to Mineral Red around 1943 for their open top cars. To go on a little farther with this not all of these cars had panel sides applied to them in the "Black scheme" era. It wasn't until 1943 did they all have the sides and also at this time is when they started to get painted Mineral Red.
Personally I would like to see them in Mineral Red so that they fit my Era a little better. So with this said I hope you do a second run in Mineral Red and in more numbers as well.

There were some online customers as well as company coal. These cars were also used to take away cinders as well. Somewhere I have a shot of a couple of cars sitting at a creamery. Also read somewhere that a couple of schools also received coal in CV cars. Later on in life after steam they were found in MOW service hauling ballast and used ties. Also of note is these cars went back to straight sides by 1955.

Didn't Atlas do the 2 bay offset hopper car? Is this significantly different?

Compare the Atlas car to the IC car photo - specifically the end's of the car side, the way the offset does not taper to the very end of the car side, but starts a few feet in off of a flat surface.
