Congratulation, Mark Dance and Tim Horton - Nov MR Trackside Photos

Page 78 of the new Nov, 2015 Model Railroader has a splendid photo of Mark Dance's Columbia & Western
snow scenery.  Tim Horton shot the photo.
Congrats to you both on good modeling and photography.

Before I read the caption, I would not have thought it was N Scale.
I don't say that lightly, and it's a target I think we all strive for, but rarely hit.

I saw that too.  Very nice photo.  I must add too that the Columbia and Western ranks in my mind as the very top N scale layout around.  Looking forward to the full spread in GMR16.  Too bad the layout is not on the cover.  It should be.

Awesome. It, along with MRP, have been must-haves. I didn't know Mark was in it, but I've got to say that I can't think of another publication that would be more fitting for his C&W.

I do have a question about Trackside Photos. What are the criteria like for submitting something?

I have no idea, but MR lists the instructions for submitting in the Trackside Photos section.
I would think that if you have a digital file that is at least 300 dpi in a 5x7" size, it would be good enough
(assuming the subject, lighting, focus, etc are excellent).

I think they have to just be eye-catching photos - interesting scene, subject, modeling.

You have a really nice picture of a PRR I1 that would probably make a good submission

I had pre-ordered mine and it arrived in the mail today.  I imagine it will be at bookstores / newsstands and at hobby shops within a week or so.

I'm not surprised or really impressed at all...

...Any time you combine Tim's photography with Mark's layout building skills, you're almost certain to get a winning image. Tim even managed to make my layout look good.

I admit this has been a fun project and I am looking forward to seeing the printed version.  It has been a series of happy shocks to see the layout in MR when I open the magazine and to stumble across photos and videos of it in their advertising and on their site.  Other than the article proofs, they don't let you know how they are going to use all the photos and stuff you send in. 

I would like to compliment Kalmbach as I think they really do an amazing job, especially on the graphics and article layout side, and they are a pleasure to work with.  Andy Sperandeo (RIP) solicited the article over a year ago and I must admit I just kind of looked at his email for a while before responding.  As I have been such a huge fan of GMR - and MRP - over the years I am sure you can understand that it was a very happy moment.

Mark actually has TWO shots in the Nov MR. There's a shot on page 6 of his layout in the ad for GMR 2016.

Haven't seen the article (yet) but I know Andy was extremely enthused to share your modeling with GMR readers.

What typically happens is all the photos that aren't used for the article go to the Trackside Photos "bin" (it was literally a slide box when I was on the staff - I'm sure it's a folder on the server nowadays! - these kids and their newfangled gadgets....!)

Obviously one issue of Trackside Photos is devoted to promoting GMR - so some of those "extras" end up in there. Any others that don't show up in the magazine will often show up in Trackside Photos over the next couple of years.

I guess you could say the GMR art director and editor pick the best shots for their issue - and the "culls" get sent to the Trackside Photos file. If that photo is a "cull" then the "good" shots are going to be stunning! Can't wait!

Ed, the submission process for Trackside has changed so much over the years that I can't really offer any reliable advice. I will say the easiest shot to get into Trackside is a "holiday" shot - train running through pretty snow scene - something that would make a good Christmas card. It was a struggle every year to come up with the "holiday" picture. One year I convinced Paul Dolkos to coat his B&M layout and some of his rolling stock with snow... he still reminds me how much fun that was to clean up!
