Using a loco with factory installed decoder on DC layout?

May be a stupid question but can I use a loco (VTR GP40-2 from Atlas) with a factory installed decoder on my DC layout? Or is all I have to do removing the decoder?

Most decoders are dual mode so you should be able to.  The decoder should detect the current being supplied.  It will probably more current than a non decoder equipped locomotive.
