PC/Kellogg X79 kit bash

I'm bringing this up from the coil car thread in Product Discussion. After having some success producing an FGE 5145/5237 boxes (still not cast yet, sorry guys), I'm looking on how one would make the PC/Kellogg X79 box. Are there any drawings out there? What parts could be used?

I saved the drawing from the Rail Yard Models website.  I'll see if I can find it.

I think the ends might be the same as a MT Greenville car?  The problem will be the roof.  Nothing like it is close in N scale without major compromises.

This is one of those cars I'd like 1 or 2 of. I remember them from as a kid at Omaha.

I got my MT Greenville car out and that is indeed the correct ends.  The problem with the roof is that it is almost but not quite perfectly flat.  I predict you'll have to splice a roof from 50' sections and then heat it and flatten it.  You might be able to get away with a completely flat roof, if there's one the correct width.  The MT Berwick is too wide.  Maybe this would be a good Shapeways piece?

If you can pull this off it'll be really cool!

An easy way to flatten a peaked roof is to run a blade along the joint inside. After a few cuts, the roof will flatten and not destroy the detail on the outside.

If I need to go flat, the LL X71 should work if sliced and spliced.

Interesting project - if my kids weren't bouncing off the walls right now, I'd look for an old Con-Cor Greenville car to see if those ends had any potential.

Dave, it depends on what we have available. The biggest problem would probably be the exterior post sides, but well see.
