Thoughts on doing this boxcar in N

Anyone have any ideas on doing this in N scale?  Obviously, the decals would have to be custom.

I believe the old Con-Cor model is pretty close.  Not bad tooling considering how long ago it was produced.

Who is the builder?  The Athearn and MTL models may be close as well.

I don't have the Athearn car, but my first thought was the CC and MTL cars.  The side sills and truck spacing would need work, and the doors aren't quite the same, but the overall car is very similar.

I have both, but would recommend the MTL version, because the CC model is of a car built without the roofwalk, and with a low brakewheel.  It would be easier to remove the roofwalk and shorten the A end ladders on the MTL car than to move the brakewheel on the CC.  Besides, the MTL car would probably be a lot easier to find, as I haven't seen the CC car advertised for years.

I would go with the ConCor model.  The doors are a little different from the car shown, but are close enough in my mind.  Ladder would have to be extended on the brake wheel end, as all ladders on the ConCor model only go halfway (on ends and sides).  Trucks would have to be moved in a little bit from the ends.

You could always replace the doors too. I hear it's been done.

Keep in mind that this is a plate C car, notice how it matches the height of the 50' cars next to it...

It looks like both the CC and MTL cars are based on  the same prototype, and have the same doors, so that probably won't matter.  The MT car seems to be a little taller, even without the roofwalk, so it might be the better choice there.  The CC car is supposed to be a plate C car, but is closer to plate B in height.

Another oddity is that they both have diagonal panel roofs, but the diagonal panels go in opposite directions.  Were the prototypes for both, or is the CC roof backwards?  The MTL roof matches all of the other diagonal panel roofs I've seen.

With all of that, if you can get the CC car easily and at a good price, it would be a good starting point.

That's a Thrall car.  It's a late model, judging by the double welds.  It's basically a copy of a Greenville car, so I'd recommend starting with a MT car, sanding the sides and scribing new weld seams.  Shouldn't be very difficult.
