I would like to know if Atlas C420 trucks will fit a life like C424.The Atlas trucks appear to have a taller contact point

  Hugh,
   maybe just put the entire C420 chassis under the C424 body ?
   the C420 is about 1' longer,and the cabs are in different locations,
   so it isn't a drop in swap.
   but Atlas does have parts on and off, whats Walthers record on parts ?

Nope... The truck center spacing is 32' 6" on the C424 while it is 34' 5" for the C420, nearly a two foot difference, which would be noticeable.

Any particular reason for asking this? The LL C424 I have is one of the best running diesels I own.

Generally, Atlas trucks work in the LL mechanisms, though I haven't tried this particular combination.  My GP18 has Atlas trucks, while my GP38 uses an Atlas shell, LL GP38-2 mechanism, and Atlas trucks.  Both locomotives received the @u18b treatment, and are fabulous runners.

As a semi-off topic question. Does anyone know if any Atlas or Kato wheel set fit the 424's trucks? I have a few that I acquired used and the wheels could stand replacing.

Problem solved.    I had suspected the contact strips were my problem and as they're not easily found I had tried some for a Atlas C-420 as the area in the chassis they slide into looks identical(it is). When that made no difference I assumed (short for make a aXX out of you and me) that as the contact points on the Life like trucks appear shorter than the Atlas truck that would be the solution. It turns out that the C420 strips install opposite to the way I had installed them. The C424 now runs perfectly and no longer falters over insulated frog turnouts. I can say is how sad it is that these are no longer available and for that matter any of the other Life like split frame engines,it's unfortunate that Walthers is unable to create a proper marketing strategy that doesn't result in their probably thinking we can never sell these until they're deeply discounted and we make nothing on them.
