I suspect the main reason for that locking tab breakage is not insertion and removal, but snagging on things while unplugged.

This is definitely the problem I saw on the NTrak circuit.  No problems in the static train room layout.  I still put the boots on all my throttles and Loconet cables.  Paranoid, you see...

I've replaced a load of them for my own throttles and club members. Not to mention a lot of club cables. Most of them are because the locking tab got snagged and  broke off. They will bend back once or twice but not more than that before breaking. I have a decent crimper and buy the jacks at the local Home Depot. 6p6c in a pack of 25.

If you have, or have access to, a 3d printer its possible to print a fix for the connectors and protectors to keep it from happening.

I have a Power Cab & have used it for over 10 years. Yes I have broken the connector more than once.
Usually from the hand held throttle falling to the floor. I repair my own cables. I warn you about getting a high quality crimper ! The one I have pushes the IDC pins down too far, then when you plug in there is no connection from the plug to the throttle.
Mine was not cheep but I have to use care when I crimp the connector on.
