bachmann gp 50

hello my sons gp50 took a trip to the floor last month, i took it apart  got it back together the problem was the brushes were bent and not making contact. now the problem is the chasis is a split frame with 2 screws if the screws are tightened to much the engine will not run if this a gap between the 2 halves it works fine, what am I missing?

The plastic spacers that keep the halves apart so they don't short.

OH CRAP! is there a way I could use plastic and cement it between the halves?

If you lost the spacer washers, you will be better off making replacement ones out of some styrene (or even cardboard).  I think they are around 0.040" thick.

The washers also determine the gap between frame halves, it may behoove you to order new ones from bachmann.
