Kitbashing a KCS Tankcar

If you were going to do this KCS training car (http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=2320701), where would you start?  Its in the AAR class for 12K to 18K gallons, but perusing the MBK site the closest I could come is some sort of hybrid between the new Bachmann single done and the old (and badly tooled) Model Power.

Any ideas?

I would start with the Atlas 17,360 gal. tank car (not to be confused with the 17,600 gal. corn syrup car).  It may be close enough as is.

Oh yeah, I'd definitely going with the 17360 car. They're really nice!

Sure appears that the Atlas model is of this prototype, so picking up an undec and the airbrush is the way to go.

I agree it seems a clear match. I found 1 on eBay today and none in stock at any other vendor - including Atlas. Off to trawl N Scale Yardsale but I am not hopeful.

I just looked and have an undecorated Atlas 17,360 gal tank car. Part number is 40500. Is that what you're looking for?

OK, so I looked at the proto photo and have to ask what the training is? Is it target practice or something!!!  Just look at all those patches man!!!! Are you going to model all of them too. 

Gotta agree too though, the Atlas car is the way to go.

Backtracking to the RR Picture Archives page that shows the thumbnail, http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/rsPicture.aspx?id=578645 , the liquid capacity of KCS 901 is shown as 17370 gallons - certainly close enough to the Atlas car's 17360 for practical purposes.

I think that is it. I have seen the Union Pacific's version and they have it so trainees can go inside too. The UP
using a siding near me as a training site and they really have a whole "safety training train" with other types of
cars too. One time it was being  pulled around with the George Bush locomotive - wish I had my camera that day.

BNSF has similar training cars/trains as well.  I wouldn't be surprised if all of the Class 1s, and maybe a good many of the regionals, have something similar.

This is a training car that I want to do. The Chevron Safety Train CHVX 911R was built in 1988 at RESCAR in Longview, Texas. RESCAR also, at the same time, built an identical car for AMOCO. Chevron for west of the Mississippi and AMOCO for east of the river. This was originally a two compartment car and as I remember the compartments were each 15,000 gallons. This car was used at all Chevron and Warren Petroleum facilities that either loaded or unloaded hazmat. It was specially made available to fire departments with an emphasis on volunteer departments from the small communities. The inside of car had shelving with 3D cutaways of all types of valves so people could see and understand the valves they were working with. A person had to climb through one of the domes and shinny down a very vertical ladder to get into the "classroom".  I traveled some with the car and scheduled it into competitors terminals such as Conoco in Phoenix. You can see different types of domeways on the top side and on the bottom there were many styles of valving to work with. This car and Amoco's car were heavily utilized for several years.



Around 1996, this car was re-worked and came out looking like the next picture. They took off the air conditioner and put a doorway into the "A" end of the car. Chevron turned the car over to The Santa FE RR in conjunction with a hazmat organization. I do not know if the car is still in use.



You may have seen this one in St. Louis but this was one of the early and first training cars.



Sorry about hijacking your thread but I too am looking for a "close enough" commercially available model to make this car. As I recall it rode on 200 ton trucks and as you can see the barrel was large diameter. In its commerce days it moved on RR's with a special dispensation because it was heavier than the maximum allowable weight on rail of 286,000 lbs. in those days, but it was ok for 315.000 lbs. Don't know about today.
