I built one using the $3 electronic fly swatter that Harbor Freight sells...works fine for my purposes.

I built one using the 120volt one. I was going for the strongest one. I  got mine from an Australian supplier. I may be wrong but I think it was Electronic Goldmine. Sorry I built it a couple of years ago. If you Google or you tube search you should find all the info you need. It does work well, my only error was using too thick of an a.c. cord. I still have a Harbor Freight fly swatter that I was going to use, one of many purchases that was never used in completing a project. I would sell it but shipping is more than the swatter, unless you don't have a Harbor near you lol

I built one of the same that Windy mentions.  I followed John Cubbins' Grassinator instructions on his Z Scale site.

Model Railroad Hobbyist ran a build article several years ago on all the home brew variants. For a while they were reselling the 120 and 12 volt ion generators as Electronic Goldmine sold out. The eBay ones should work well as long as you wire them properly.

I've built both.  The fly swatter version works fine, the ion generator version works better.  If you can build the ion generator version for under $40, then I would recommend doing that.  If it cost more, you can make the fly swatter version for under $10.

And it's been a while, but IIRC, the ion generator version doesn't have the discharge zap of the fly swatter.  I wouldn't call this a big deal, but it definitely comes into play when using it.

I made the fly swatter version and my grass stands up straight.  Anything more powerful than that seems to just be getting into electrical hazard territory.  I feel a lot more comfortable around something powered by two AA batteries rather than 120v.  My grass stands straight at 90 degrees,  more power won't get the grass standing any straighter.

thanks for the replies. I have a fly swatter one works fine on small area with short grass. My question is; are the eBay ion generators the  same as the oatley or Gold mine ones?
