Storing Bachmann's Heavy Mountain

The "box" that it comes in seems to invite damage if used to store the Heavy Mountain, then bring it out again.  Have any of you found a creative way to store the loco and tender without damaging it?

Is this the same box used to package, protect, ship across seas, and keep the model in on store shelves?

How would this invite damage?

I think because it would take a shoehorn to get the loco back into that wonderful protective packaging.

Some of Bachmann's packaging seems to be excessively tight on the models. It does sometimes take a concerning amount of force to put them back into their original packaging.

Most N scale starts growing as soon as it is removed from the 'factory air' making it difficult if not impossible to return to the original box. If left out long enough, some will keep growing until it reaches HO proportions. Of course, not feeding help limit this change.

:| :?      I have stored my locos back in the original packaging . The storage is the same as for the two ten two. Putting the engine back in the wrap over piece that goes back in the clear sleeve takes mental practice the first few times, should be done over a soft protective surface after a few times it is easy to repack. I don't have that particular model, but I do have several other Bachmann models (like Acela, DDX40A, Amfleet cars, Connie and few others).  The ones I have  come in a plastic jewel box with a paper insert. Inside is a nicely packed model. It is in a clear plastic sleeve. Once the sleeve is removed, the model sits in a cradle which surrounds id on the bottom, front, top and rear. It is molded to retain the model really well.  There are also few thin foam rubber pieces glued in the cradle to better cushion the delicate areas. That cradle is a single piece of plastic with "hinges" on the 4 corners, wrapped around the model. One of the corners has a snap molded in it. Once that piece is unsnapped the cradle unravels to expose the model, which can then be easily removed.  To pack the model you simply reverse the procedure. Place the model in that open cradle, wrapped around the model and snap it closed. Then slide the clear sleeve over the cradle.

IMO, this is a really well designed packaging which is very robust in protecting the model and yet, it is easily opened to get the model out and back in.

I think you don't know how to use the packaging properly. They are extremely easy to remove and re-install in the nest. I see it all the time at the shop where people don't realize that there is a tab on the end that allows the nest to open up so that you can gently remove the loco from it's cradle.

I think that is exactly what the problem is.

I had no idea that the "nest" opened as it does.  That makes all of the difference.  Thanks, guys.

Been there done that, Dick  Discovered the easy way when watching a fellow club member open his (don't know how he figured it out).  When you consider how much paper work comes with B'mann steam engines, directions for opening the cradle would have been nice.
