American Limited Diaphragms

Good evening all,

I was wondering if anyone has used the above diaphragms for diesel locomotives?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, I've used them between my cab units on my 50's CPR. Because my cabs are assigned to semi permanent consists, and because I've made some effort to close couple them, I use only 1 diaphragm between each pair (in other words, a diaphragm on one unit but not it's adjoining unit). For example, an A-B-A consist has diaphragms on both ends of the B unit, but not on the A's. It seems to be OK visually with black diaphragms between the dark red CPR units, but it may be a bigger problem with lighter paint schemes. I also use the heavyweight car type as they seem to fit a bit better.

Looking over the fleet I must say that the above seems a little inconsistent; it looks like another item for the list.

They were mounted on some custom-painted Kato F7's I bought.   After a little while, I did the same thing: I removed the working diaphragm from one of each A unit so when they are close-coupled back to back there is only actually one working
one in there, and a flat face of the other one.  I think they still look good.

I did this because as smooth as those things seem to be, they would not slide over each other quite well enough
to avoid derailing the engine occasionally on curves.  I was surprised, because these are older Kato F units that
are pretty darn heavy.  But sure enough, that diaphragm would nudge the engine up a little on curves.

I do the same on some Kato passenger cars.  Put them on one car and it visually fills up the space and does not seem to create problems on the curves.

Don't they make diaphragms specific for locomotives?

Doug.

Thanks for the feedback guys, much appreciated.
Doug, they make one set for Con-Cor PAs and another for Kato Fs. I intend to use them on Intermountain F units. The single diaphragm seems like the way to go.
