How close is this version to the Oroville Dam U25Cs?

Different.

I'm pretty sure the Oro Dam units were the demo units for the model.  The boxy thing behind the cab is not present.

I'm guessing some minor mods would be needed? (such as removing the box on the long hood roof?)

ProtoMate?!  I wouldn't think that they would have the ballz to use DKS coupler's name on their  couplers!  These are supposed to be all-new Vlk couplers (using whatever name they'll use on them).

That is a grill in the roof.

The length of the coupler shank seems a bit excessive.

I realize that this is a pre-production model, but I hope that they work out the fit and finish issues that are evident.

I agree, looks a bit rough!

+2.  Sometimes those pre-production samples take a beating by rough handling.  Looks like the rear handrail needs to be snapped back into the cab wall.  I'm not sure why the cab is not resting on the subbase correctly, though.

You don't want to see what our samples look like after a show, especially if they travel via couriers... I am sure this very reputable company will exceed our expectations with their production models. I'm excited to see a mfg getting back into the N scale market.
Model railroading isn't saving my life, but it's providing me moments of joy not normally associated with my current situation..... Train are good!
