Any reason you could not use the Railcar Restoration kit in a layout set on the 1953-1967 range?

Exactly.  They are just boxes parts to me.

Yep. That's how you get Lewistown Junction Station out of Water Street Freight Terminal.

I usually look at what the kit is for, then look at the picture in the box art to see what it really is. Funny how Walthers seems to get the name (purpose) wrong so often.  :D

Usually when you are doing a web search, you are searching for a building by name, not purpose though. If the name is not realated to the original purpose, then you will never find it unless you know what you are looking for.

While they are both retreads, it`s better than the outhouses and windmill types they have been releasing

Don't know about you, but I can NEVER use enough outhouses on my layout!

Here's a Clerihew about Ed. K.

Ed Kapucinski
Every night, he plants a new tree.
But mention his law
and you've pulled your last straw!

Alternate version:
Ed Kapucinski
Every night, he plants a new tree.
He asks excitedly "Did you say Ménage à Trois?"
No, I said "Ed's Law."

...but do they come in a jewel case?

Don't see why not. Actually kinda like the color too. There are quite a few industrial building in the Cincy area that used sandstone brick.

I will agree with Tony though. You guys maybe the ones who see more than what the box says but the retailer see's everybody and most people want the name and will use it as it says on the box. That's one of the reasons the Walthers Modular concept, didn't achieve the results expected.

When I looked at the two kits my first thought was that one would make a great bottling plant and the other a supermarket.

And Walthers gets two strikes.  The Railcar Restoration & Charter Shop Building is a rehash of the earlier Machine Shop, just a different color brick, maybe.  I don't believe "New" applies to products that are just repackaged.
