I can't get into the nscalevehicles.org site.  When I click on the link, it takes me to some weird search engine.

I had a problem signing up to the group discussion. It told me I needed to create a yahoo profile, even though I already was logged into mine.

Thanks Carter. Your work is much appreciated by many of us. Especially those of us scrounging for era appropriate US vehicles. (Unfortunately I chose to model the dark abyss of the 1960's.) I'm pleased with the VW 1600's coming from Lemke. Not exactly US cars, but there were plenty of them around in the late 60's. Any idea where they can be bought.

And one more question... What is this "Markus Schiavo’s encyclopedia of N sized vehicles" you talk about? I have never heard of it. (Not that that is a surprise. My ignorance is legendary.  ) Is it web based or hard copy?

Thank you, and it looks like Lou posted the link for you.  The Lemke VW 1600s were announced in January of 2012, but have not been released yet.  I was able to order some other Lemke models (like the VW T2 Flower Power) from DM Toys.  There is a link for DM Toys in the where to buy section.  http://nscalevehicles.org/where_to_buy.php

I am working on getting the cars from the 1960s organized and photographed so they can be added to the site.  Many of them were tooled 40 or so years ago, so they do not look nearly as nice as the more modern models. 

Nice touch, Carter.  The format is definitely easier to use, IMO, than the Spur-N site, where you have to know the manufacturer (and German).  Can we contribute, should we have obscure models?  And how?

I would like to keep these pages focused on models that are or were in the common distribution channels, even if it was just for a short period of time.  This way modelers might have some hope of finding them today.  However, let me know what you have photos of, and if I cannot use it, I am sure Markus can.

And if that fails, you might try a Google search for " N Scale Vehicle Association"  That will return the new website as well as the Yahoo discussion group, and a few other sites I was not aware of.

A few ideas on the spur-n site:

Other than the home page, most of the pages are in German and English.  To get to the vehicles, go to the upper right of the home page and click N-AUtos.

In my case, that's where the fun started.  None of the links would work for me...  However, right-clicking and choosing "open in new tab" opened them.  I use Firefox, which may be a factor, or may not.  In any case, if you click a link and nothing happens, you can try this.

The same thing happened with the manufacturers index page, and the same solution worked.

The detail pages seem to be only in German, but aren't hard to read.  "BEZUGSQUELLEN" seems to mean "exporter" or "dealer".  "Maßstab" is "scale".  The manufacture's description is about all would need translating, and I'll agree that Google can do some strange things with that.

"weird search engine":  My ISP does that if I try to go to a site it can't connect to.  I've set my preferences NOT to search for, or recommend, alternatives, but SuddenLink insists on doing it anyway.  Then they say, "If you don't like this, change your preferences."  There's a FireFox add-on that allows one to absolutely block a given site, and I've blocked Suddenlink's search site. 

Annoying when one has to block their own ISP!

I knew I would get in trouble when I put that phrase in the post.  This project is an extension of the display and handout I have at the N scale conventions, which is designed to help those who are not very familiar with what is, or in some cases was available for a specific time period.  My thoughts are that I would limit it for now to models that were mass produced, and could generally be found in hobby shops. 

I certainly don't want to slight any manufacturer, especially you!  However, there is no way I can research every N scale model that has been made, and come up with a photo that was taken under approximately the same conditions for each model.  That is why I am initially limiting these pages to "ready to place" plastic injection molded, diecast metal and spin cast metal models, even though some of the models in the photos have extra detailing, or may even be repaints and kitbashes. 

As time permits, I hope to add at least some of the great kits that are available, including those I have from Willmodels.  This will be an ongoing project that like a model railroad layout, will probably never be completed.

I should have added in my earlier replies that once we have the bugs worked out on getting the first photo gallery posted, we will need lots of photos of N scale model vehicles, common or obscure.  This will be a good place to showcase your modeling with kitbashes and detailing projects, or simply just working a model vehicle into a scene.  We are hoping to have something similar to the galleries found on the 1/87 Vehicle Club's site.  Here is a link to the latest HO scale vehicle gallery:  http://www.1-87vehicles.org/Photo/photo558.php
