I think this is a great topic.

My son (currently 5, but I bought him the Bachman E-Z Track N-Scale starter layout set when he was 4) doesn't really know anything but N-Scale.  I taught him to be gentle with the cars/diesels and to not run the throttle all the way up.  He does well and even enjoys switching on his small track set-up.

I'd like to get going on my permanent layout in the basement so he and my daughter (8) can get some construction assignments of there own (maybe plaster casting and/or scenery painting).  Benchwork is 2/3 of the way there, getting closer to that moment.  I'm looking forward to getting them involved.

I already got my son started. He's only a few months old, though.

He could deal pretty well with Conrail...



...but Amtrak, on the otherhand GFTO, said he!

The "kids" can rerail an N scale car in a quarter of the time it takes us old farts.

rsn48:  I can rerail an N scale car much faster than HO - as long as I don't look at the track!  Holding it by the trucks and rerailing it by feel is easy, one truck at a time.  Trying to watch what I'm doing has never worked well, and I've been doing it for 45 years... 

For what it's worth, rerailing an HO car by any method has never worked well for me.  They feel too big to hold in one hand...

Josh. I got a good laugh out of that.

Actually, Chessiefan started about that early.

My wife would say-  your turn to watch the baby while I go to the store.

I'd say,  OK.  Put him in the baby carrier.  Set the carrier on the layout, and run trains around him.
He could hear the sound of the trains going around him.

(shed's tear......)  He turned out good!

Why did you have to go there? Just cause my boy likes passenger and I loath it... oh well you cant win all of em.

My son started with Fisher-Price Geotraxs (http://www.fisher-price.com/en_US/brands/geotrax/index.html). He could set it up anyway he wanted to and it was practically indestructible. He would run trains on my N scale layout and at Bantrak shows the last 3-4 years. This last year he moved to N scale (he is 11) in the form of Unitrack and yes passenger service.
