Detroit Edison Hopper

I know there are no hoppers available to properly represent the Detroit Edison coal trains, but does anyone know what hopper might be a good stand in for this car?

Deluxe Innovations made (still makes???) DETX hoppers that are silver bodied with black ends as well as orange rotary coupler markings. I happen to have an 11 car set that i got for $100 at the Bedford N Scale Weekend two years ago. They run great, and not to mention quietly.

Cody Thanks, but those would represent the newer cars. I failed to mention the Thrall type cars and it appears the only cars that would (I hate to say) represent the DEEX cars would be the Athearn thrall gondola. It is better than nothing and I really doubt this car will ever properly be produced. It is a one off type car specifically built for DEEX.

Basically what I need to do now is to find a good photo of one so I can maybe get the decals produced to paint my own fleet of cars. This would be a fun train to build.

There was a guy at the Ann Arbor show two years ago that had both the DI 20 cars (1,3,6 & 10) and the 16 cars done by Athearn, plus a slew of undec old Kato SD-40's & U-30C's.
If I'd known I had sold over $400 of stuff at the club table, I would have cleaned him out just to go with my two DEEX SD-40s.

Just saw a bunch in Lang Yard over the weekend, as I was in Toledo for a family reunion.  No chance to stop and peruse, though.

Lang Yard in Toledo is used as storage yard for the cars headed for the Monroe Power Plant

I think the gondolas Brian's referring to are the Fruehauf aluminum battleship gons built for Detroit Edison exclusively in the '70s. Some are in scrap service for AMGX. None of the rrpicturearchives listings for DEEX/DETX have the original gons. And no, nothing's remotely close, in any scale. Truly a job for Shapeways! These were unique trains, with DE owning the locomotives too, which ran with slave units into Pennsylvania. Over Conrail, I believe.

Now if I could get or find dimensional data on these cars, I actually could get them done at Shapeways or some other print shop and then cast myself up a bunch. Time to start searching.
