Does anyone know where the Southern Pacific coil cars (as made by Red Caboose) were/are in service? And what were the steel coils they delivered used for? Appliances, autos, etc.? Thanks for any help.

When steel was big business in Baltimore, I would see them being loaded. The different thickness and treatment of the coils determined would would be made with them. Stainless coils would be used for mufflers and appliances. Regular steel coils would be sent out to be made into stainless steel or stranded steel if the plant did not make the there. I hope this helps.

In short, everywhere and yes. If you're modelling uber-modern there are not alot left that haven't been repainted. But the SP's used to show up all over the place. Especially the hoods. Even if the area you model didn't have an online industry that used them, they would be on manifests going somewhere on the mainlines. You also donl;t necessarily have to have an online appliance or autoparts facility as there are many different industry's that prcessed stell for specialty uses and received cars of coiled stell for finishing/coating.
