Hi guys -

I see a lot of familiar faces around here, like Max, Dave V, Tony, and others.  Good to see that everyone is still together.

I had some time this weekend to test out some new motors from Eldon this weekend.  I will post my results in another thread.  Basically, the Faulhaber 1016 w/ 4:1 gearhead is the clear winner for my I1.  For some reason, this particular motor runs much faster than the one Eldon sent to me about a year ago.

I also have a Mashima 1024 to play with on my PRR L1 conversion.  Tony, this motor has a ton of torque and is virtually a drop-in replacement for the stock Kato motor.  You need to Dremel just a little bit of the frame to fit the motor into the chassis, which I need to do in the coming days.  I suspect that this motor will provide a lot of torque and work much better than the stock Kato motor.

That L1 conversion uses a stock Kato Mikado right?

Yes, the conversion uses a stock Kato Mikado.  I am just repowering my L1 as the stock motor is fairly weak torque wise and gets hot when running a long train.

Maybe your first 1016 was a 12 volt and your latest one is a 6 volt.  That would explain the speed difference.  Check the numbers on
the motor.

I don't have the old Faulhaber motor, I returned it to Eldon.  But I do remember checking whether it was a 6 volt or a 12 volt, and it said 6 volts.  The gearhead was smaller in diameter than the motor.

Interestingly, the new motor I received from Eldon also is 6 volts, but the gearhead is the same diameter as the motor.  The gearhead is also longer than I remember. 

Either way, I am happy now.  The slow speed control is great, and the top speed of about 40 mph is about the speed I run trains anyway.

On my L1, I am replacing the stock Kato motor with a Mashima 1024 can motor.  This motor has a lot of torque and a lower top end of about 13,000 RPMs no load.  It will be interesting to see how this motor stacks up.
