This probably belongs in Proto Photo but since there a lot of PRR fans here I though I posted it here.
Probably you have seen this poster before...
Did you ever wonder what the "ghost" locomotives and blueprints were about?
Here is one of the patent drawing that goes with those images...
The patent was issued to the Pennsylvania Railroad care of a Mr Stein. Steins' applications on the design continue into 1949, including a patent for a way to ballast the beast as she uses up her fuel and water, allowing her to maintain maximum tractive effort. Similar to the Chesapeake & Ohio M1, the Pennsylvania classified this somewhat ugly monster a V1. The project was still born, in '49 the Pennsylvania brass pulled the plug on the project and it was all for naught. The V1 passed into obscurity. Most railfans, including the PRR faithful, have never heard of her.
If we ever get a N scale model of a PRR centipede, the drive could be used to cobble up a model of this huge critter. I imagine a GG1 could be adapted if need be. Would make an interesting addition to the roster of a PRR layout, if only just for fun.
