I see all the incredible PRR-prototype stuff in HO scale.  It's expensive, but just about everything PRR ever ran is now available ready-to-run in HO.  Jealous?  Yes.  That is, until I start running 2 mainline PRR trains at once while switching an 11-track yard all in a 10x10 bedroom with room to spare.

As someone who models in N and O both, I like to think I've got the best of two worlds to work in. That said, I still don't understand some of the decisions that major manufacturers make. For example, I can get both the AEM7 and ALP44 from Atlas in O (and HO), but not N? They'd be a big seller in N. Yet I can get decent Amfleet I and II cars in N, but apparently they're hard to come by in HO, and nearly impossible in O. What gives?

I totally agree with Dr. Vollmer, except, in my case, its the RF&P locomotives available in HO that I can't get from the same manufacturer in N.  However, it would be a huge challenge to build a reasonable-sized layout even in N scale that does the RF&P and its double tracked mainline racetrack justice.  I would have to fill an entire basement to come close in HO, and I don't even want to think about tackling something like that.  At least I have my two GP40s that Atlas did offer in N scale.  Someday, I may come across some of the unnumbered RF&P GP40s also offered, and I'll snatch them up, if reasonably priced.  That will alleviate some of the problem.  Patience is a virtue.

And the only plastic GP40X on the market..IIRC there's been 2 runs and both sold out..

When I compared the model against the prototype (NS 7001) the model was a close match-closer then anything previously-other then a brass GP40X.

If you want to talk about rough models then we can start with  N since its still decade or two behind as far as road specific details.

BTW..A  Atlas "expert" said the GP40X would never sell..

Yes but,let's compare apples to apples.

The Atlas GP7/9 of 2012 looks like it did 15 years ago-a generic GP9 that's been released in several road names regardless of the road specific details.

Frankly, I cannot imagine any model or feature of any other scale that would make me want to switch from N-scale.  N-scale is IT for me and I knew it was going to be scratch-build city when I started seriously modeling in 1/160th scale way back in '85.  Things have become a LOT better since then, but I still find myself scratchbuilding and doing some serious kitbashing for items I am sure will NEVER be produced in N-scale, but I  need 'em for my transition era layout..however, NOW I do it with Optivisors!
