Railfanning Detroit?

I have a conference the first week of May in Detroit and was wondering if there were any SAFE places to railfan the first Saturday I will get into town? Is Delray Junction safe and does anyone know how to get there? I will be arriving at the Amtrak station via bus and then picking up a rental car to head out for an afternoon of railfanning. Also, is there any way to get Delray Connecting Railroad locomotives from public property and where? Thanks!

Guess no one has made it out of the war zone known as the motor city alive to post a reply.....Guess that will tell ya if there is a place to fan......

Maybe you should invest in one of these before going to that city.

Detroit earns its reputation one body at at time.

That said, if you are street smart you will be fine.

Delray has a lot of traffic and is right next to a freeway so its easy on and off.

If you go there you will be close to Rougemere yard in Dearborn which is great for shooting rolling stock.
(my current fav place to go)

Poke your nose over to http://railroadfan.com/phpbb you can get train locations etc and some other location ideas for your visit.

Looks like I get a bonus for heading to Detroit for a conference. Instead of taking the Wolverine/Capitol Limited home, I will be diverting on the Wolverine/Southwest Chief to LA with a 4 hour drive to Las Vegas for a second conference.  8)  :P Staying at the Luxor with a return Southwest Chief/Capitol Limited for a total of 16 days away from the office.  ;D

Sounds like a fun trip!
I grew up just south of Detroit and remember watching Conrail freight trains along with GTW all the time. Back then it wasnt life threatening and you still should not have to much trouble getting around! But just be safe anyways!

I survived a few hours at Delray Junction. I went there after hitting the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village. I had no idea today was Day out With Thomas there. Ugh! I photographed it anyway since I wasn't sure I was going to see some real trains today. Stayed for 2 hours at Delray and caught 10 trains (3 CP, 3 NS, 2 CN, 1 CSX, and 1 CSAO). Neighborhood wasn't too bad and there was decent police presence. I'm planning on going back tomorrow all day prior to checking in at the conference at night.
