Just picked up one of these at a decent price.  Got a CSX one just because I like the older GE's.  My question is.  When were they put out to pasture?  I don't think any are running around nowdays.

CSX's or in general?

CSX got rid of theirs at the end of last year.  They were likely to go anyway, the recession and subsequent parking of units only sealed their fate.

BNSF's and UP's didn't survive much past 2002/2003.  BNSF just parked theirs, and UP stripped theirs of their goodies, painted them grey, and turned most, if not all, of them into control cabs for RCL operation.  I'm not sure how many are still around, but I would have to think some of those are still around since they converted so many so few years ago.

Thanks. Was more interested in CSX but the other info is good also.

For the last number of years, though, they've been mostly used in local service (which they were pretty poorly suited for).

I second Ed's statement about CSX.  Anywhere I've ever seen them for around the last ten years, they were in a yard being used for local service in medium cities (Mobile, Ala,  Dothan, Ala,  Pensacola, FL,  Montgomery, Ala).

They were usually filthy and look terribly rusty.  I think CSX policy was to use them in this kind of service until they had a catastrophic failure.  Then, when that happened, it was off to the scrapper or secondary market.  They were not to be rebuilt the way EMDs were.

If my lastest readings are correct.  About 90+ of UP's units have/are now Genset cores/or working Gensets.  They have an order of 98 units.

Also, the Tier 1 or 2?? EPA requirements.  Pretty much spelled the end of the Dash 7 series units on any Class 1 at the start of the year 2010.

Unrelated, but I used to love watching sets of three CR B36-7's hustle a TV on the Waterlevel Route just west of Buffalo in the late 1980's. To me, that was how pigs got moved; that was how to do it right. Sure, GP40-2's and B40-8 were standard fare on the TV's as well, and they did a creditable job to be sure, but the B36-7's seemed poured into the role.

I've no use for B36-7's (or any -7 for that matter) in my modeling... a shame, really.

Funny you should say that.  I'm still waiting on Atlas to make a Seaboard System B36-7.
