Been on vacation this past week, and went railfanning in MD/WV as well as Toronto, ON.  First, pics of NS near Hagerstown, railfannning with my father-in-law.

Spotted a hint of blue at NS' Vardo Yard on Monday.

In spite of having driven all the way from Nebraska, I still caught Uncle Pete leading NS228 South with doublestacks from Harrisburg to Norfolk.  We paced him from Vardo to Shepherdstown.

The going-away shot shows an ever-rarer standard cab.

The power has already throttled back for the Potomac crossing at Shepherdstown.

The B&O roundhouse at Martinsburg.  Nothing was running at the time.  It was the Federal observation of the 4th of July and brutally hot.  The signals all read amber over red.

Every time I visit my wife's family in Martinsburg I leave smitten with the B&O.

The Canadian pics from Toronto Union Station today will be up later.

We were only there for a day and a half...  We've already got so many family and friends "booked" that we're rushing from place to place for a few hours here and a few hours there.  One of the people we're seeing is my college roommate in Bethlehem whom we missed on our last two trips.  There just isn't enough time to see everyone and still have some semblance of a relaxing trip.

The main focus was alone time for my wife and I at Niagara and for the 75th Anniversary of the Penn State Department of Meteorology celebration.

Just saw y'all in May.  I'll catch you guys next time; sorry!

...and besides, some a$$hat I know came all the way to Bellevue, NE, just a month ago and didn't visit the Juniata Division! ;D

I played hooky on Friday the 18th of June in order to catch as many of the VRE locomotives as possible before they are replaced with the new MP36s'. Too bad I saw at the unveiling someone reported the VRE President saying the rest won't be operational until December, but hey, that gibes plenty of time to catch some more if I don't already have all of them.  ;D

1) Virginia Railway Express F40PH-2 No. V36 leads VRE commuter train, P305, southbound on the RF&P Subdivision in Alexandria, Virginia on 18 June 2010.

2) Virginia Railway Express RP39-2C No. V05 leads VRE commuter train, V325, southbound on the RF&P Subdivision in Alexandria, Virginia on 18 June 2010.

3) Virginia Railway Express GP40H-2 No. V22 leads VRE commuter train, P331, southbound on the RF&P Subdivision in Alexandria, Virginia on 18 June 2010.

4) Norfolk Southern B32-8 No. 3536 leads local, Z854, northbound on CSX's RF&P Subdivision in Alexnadria, Virginia on 18 June 2010.

5) CSX AC6000CW No. 5010 leads CSX manifest freight train, Q410, northbound on the RF&P Subdivision in Alexandria, Virginia on 18 June 2010.

6) CSX ES44DC GEVO No. 5456 leads CSX manifest freight train, Q416, northbound on the RF&P Subdivision in Alexandria, Virginia on 18 June 2010.

7) CSX SD70MAC No. 4795 leads CSX coal train, T104, southbound on the RF&P Subdivision in Alexandria, Virginia on 18 June 2010.

8) Amtrak P42DC No. 193 leads Amtrak P086, the "Colonial," northbound on the RF&P Subdivision in Alexandria, Virginia on 18 June 2010.

Check out my website (listed under the web tag) for railfanning pictures from 32 states, D.C., and Ontario. Current locomotive count: 5772!
