Book recommendation

I'm slowly rolling into the 21st century and trying to learn more about these washing machines/ dishwashers on wheels . . . er, modern locomotives.  I recently picked up a copy of this:



It's got a ton of eye candy.  Only a few photos are black and white, most are color.  I'm now able to tell the difference between an ES44 blah blah blah and a Dash 9- whatever.  Incidentally, I'm officially voting for the SD70M-2 as the ugliest loco out there.

Anyway, if you don't already own a copy of this book, I'd recommend it.

Sounds like a very useful resource to me, since I can't really tell the difference between a lot of late model locomotives.  Thanks for the heads-up on this book.

Incidentally, I agree that the SD70M-2 is one butt-ugly locomotive.  An example of form follows function, I presume.  However, I think the SD70M is a much more pleasing design and one of my favorite modern locomotives.

You and I are on the same page.  Of the more modern locos, I think the SD70M, SD75M and the SD75I are the most appealing.  The ATSF warbonnet SD75M is just classy looking.  Of course as we enter 2010 I don't know how "modern" those are considered at this point.

Its funny, I actually reallyt like the new M-2s with their bunker looking cabs. They look like they mean business.

I think most modern locos are ugly but I do like the pug nose on these.  My favorite modern loco is the SD80MAC.  Got to get this book as it is hard to know one model from another nowadays.  If it wasn't for the fact that CSX lists what it is on the sides I'd be lost.  Used to be able to give a quick look at first and second gen and know exactly what I was looking at.

That is a realy cool book, I have it plus the edition before it. I also have the two CSX roster books which are similar. Withers does some good books and Diesel Era is one of my favorite magazines.
